H&M Plus Size…But Not Really
H&M has been a high street/affordable staple for years. The Swedish juggernaut started out selling women’s clothing back in 1947. Fast forward to 2020 and they have more than 5,000 locations around the world. When H&M launched their plus size collection in 2011, I am going to be honest – I wasn’t impressed. The clothing was very dowdy to me and a LOT different from the youthful and trendy main line. Once they pulled their plus sizes from in-store in 2016; it was a wrap for me and I really have not shopped there ever since.
Fast forward to earlier this year and both Alissa from StylishCurves and Marie over at TheCurvyFashionista published similar stories and videos about H&M plus size. The scoop was: H&M’s main line had extended to a 2X, which was a size 18/20 AND their plus sizes now went up to a size 4x/30. The net/net is, if you wear up to a size 18/20 (or even a 22) you can shop INSIDE THE STORE.
H&M still removed the plus size selection in store (with no plans of putting it back). I am of the mind that the plus size community often forgets our sisters over a size 20, but I always try to be mindful. If someone just one size above me cannot find viable clothing options, then we have a long way to go. I am hopeful H&M see’s positive response to extended sizing, and they wake up.
Finding the H&M Plus Sizes in Store
Now that the mainline goes up to a size 2x, you can now shop it pretty much in every H&M store in the world. To test that theory, I actually went to two H&M stores near me and sure enough, integrated into the racks was the new size 2x in pretty much every item in the store. I picked up a few items to try out the expanded sizing. One of those items was this black shirred bodice dress I AM OBSESSED WITH. It is perfect to lounge in, throw on for errands, or even dress up with a belt and heels. We still have a few weeks of summer left, so I think you’ll get lots of wear out of this one.
We can’t try on clothing at the moment, so I bought a 2x and hoped for the best. The pieces I tried in 2x either fit OR was a tad too large for my 18/20 frame. I did NOT try on any trousers nor denim, but based on what I did try, I think up to a size 22 could get away with many of the dresses, tops and skirts available in the store. If you are above a size 20/22, the H&M plus size range is available online.
I’m gonna be honest; I still feel like the plus size items they offer are a little too dowdy for my personal taste. The items also run fairly large (I ordered a fitted blazer in 2x from the plus range and it was HUGE). I still don’t understand why H&M refuses to put plus sizes back in the store. Plus size women shop, so where is the disconnect?
H&M Makes Sustainable Plus Size Clothing
One thing I really like about H&M is that there are sustainable options in the plus size range. Sustainability over a size 12 is often hard to find, but with the H&M Conscious collection, you have options and a lot of those options are still at an affordable price point.
Overall, I really like the items I have already purchased. H&M is affordable and has sustainable options IN plus sizes. The H&M plus size and expanded sizing has earned them a new fan.
